Art Around Our School

As I.A.R. students walk around the school, they’re greeted by murals and paintings, two of them being the IMAGINE mural in the foyer and the sunset painting in our school office.

Mrs. Flowers, one of our art teachers, stated the IMAGINE mural was created in 2010 by her students. It is located in the main foyer and consists of the word “imagine” with colorful surrounding tiles that represent sports, peace, education, etc. One of her students, who was independent in their work, thought of the idea! Classes soon started to contribute and participate, and added their own touch--the fabric pockets that surround the word today.

Mrs. Flowers states that each pocket was made by one student, and holds a hope or dream that they wish to achieve in their life--there are 178 pockets! The goal was to show others that is it possible to reach for new ideas no matter the situation.

As for the sunset painting in our school office, it was created by three seventh graders in 2017--Liam Kelly, Kevin Ives, and Candela Cuesta. Mrs. Flowers states that these students found the design online and wanted to do a painting off of it. I still interviewed Liam, though! He said, “as a group, Kevin, Candela, and I wanted to create a painting of nature. We also wanted to make something for the school. In the office there was a painting that was made by a couple of students a couple of years ago. With the permission of Mrs. Flowers, we painted our piece over the original painting. So, we came up with the idea of painting this particular scene. We want our painting to say the message: Embrace nature and the fact that it’s all around us.”

So next time you’re in the main foyer or office, stop and take a look at these pieces of art!
