PBIS:  Keeping IAR Respectful, Responsible, Resilient, and Safe

Have you ever wondered who arranges the school events? Or assemblies? Do you know

who decides on the ticket prizes? PBIS does all of this and more! PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. The PBIS program helps students learn and understand the expectations here at IAR: being respectful, responsible, resilient, and safe. As you know, these rules and expectations apply to all regular academic classes you engage in, as well as hallways, bathrooms, and study halls. In addition, these expectations apply to lunch, recess, and after school. Students earn tickets when they demonstrate the expected behaviors.

Here at IAR, PBIS has done a number of fantastic events and other things to improve the school. They organize the our whole school assemblies, such as the first day of school assembly, when everyone gathered in the gym. They create and develop advisory lessons and activities as well. They also created the trimester ticket menus and homeroom competitions such as dodgeball, bingo, and pancake breakfasts.

PBIS encourages students to spend their tickets on the prizes offered. They really don't want you just saving all of the tickets you earn just because you don't like the prizes. Some students are walking around with up to one hundred tickets! Some students don't enjoy, like, or agree with the ticket prizes offered on the ticket menus. If so, you can change that! The IAR climate committee decides what’s on the ticket menu. If you want to change what’s on the ticket menu, join the Climate Committee that meets after school usually on Thursdays, once a month. PBIS wants new ideas for IAR, so don't forget to join to contribute your suggestions!

PBIS also created a focus group that created new slogans for IAR. The slogans include: “Roadrunners run on kindness,” “Roadrunners run on respect,” and finally, “Roadrunners are made of intelligence, awesomeness, and respect.” One of these slogans could potentially be the new slogan used for IAR, and PBIS plans to hold a vote in the future.

PBIS encourages all students to follow the expectations and be responsible, resilient, respectful, and safe.
